Private pay is the most common method that families in Louisiana use to cover the costs of assisted living. These include income, such as Social Security benefits, and personal savings. Other personal funding options include some life insurance policies, long-term care insurance and proceeds from the rental or sale of a home.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) makes several benefit programs available for eligible veterans and their surviving spouses. Payments from these programs can be used to cover assisted living costs. The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs (LDVA) offers benefits counseling and other support to military-connected individuals. Find a local LDVA veteran service office or call 225-219-5000.

Medicaid is a program jointly funded and coordinated by federal and state governments and is designed to support individuals and families who have low incomes. In Louisiana, the state’s Medicaid program is known as Healthy Louisiana, and while it won’t cover room and board in assisted living, in some cases, it may be used to cover the cost of certain health and personal care services provided to residents.[02]
Healthy Louisiana helps cover these costs in two ways: through the state’s regular Medicaid plan and through the Community Choices Waiver, a home- and community-based services (HCBS) program.[02,03] Residents can visit a local Louisiana Department of Health office or call 888-342-6207 for more information.
As a federal health insurance program, Medicare covers the cost of medically necessary services and products for qualified individuals 65 or older. Like Medicaid, Medicare won’t cover room and board in assisted living, but it can pay for certain services, such as skilled nursing and physical and occupational therapy, as well as medications and durable medical equipment.[04]
For help with Medicare in Louisiana, seniors and their families can contact the Louisiana Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). Counselors with SHIIP provide free and unbiased information.
In Louisiana, the state’s Department of Health licenses and oversees assisted living communities, also known as adult residential care providers. The department oversees compliance with state regulations, which are designed to ensure that residents receive affordable, high-quality care. It inspects all new providers and conducts repeat inspections at least annually.[05]
Louisiana defines four levels of adult residential care providers:
Care provided in Louisiana’s assisted living communities includes medication administration, intermittent nursing services, assistance with personal hygiene, assistance with transfers and ambulation, assistance with dressing, housekeeping, and laundry.[05]
Louisiana doesn’t provide inspection reports online, but it does maintain a downloadable file of licensed providers. Use this report to learn when a community was originally licensed and when its license expires.
